The Maqamat are melodic modes, families of notes and movements that give recitation its emotional character. Reciters commonly move between a handful of core Maqamat, each with its own feel.

The core modes

Bayati is warm and grounding and often opens a recitation. Hijaz carries a yearning, reverent quality. Nahawand feels tender and reflective. Kurd is gentle and intimate, while Ajam and Rast bring brightness and resolve.

You don’t learn them all at once

We introduce one Maqam at a time, mapped and applied inside real verses, so each becomes second nature before the next is added.
