A clear starting point for adults and children beginning Tajweed, the foundations that come before any melody.

Tajweed is the set of rules that governs how the Qur’an is recited correctly, giving every letter its right sound, length and characteristics. For beginners it can feel like a long list, but a small number of foundations carry most of your early progress.

Start with the Makharij (points of articulation)

Every letter has a place in the mouth or throat where it is produced. Getting the Makharij right is the single most important early skill, because a letter articulated from the wrong place becomes a different letter entirely.

Then the Sifaat (characteristics of letters)

Once the letters come from the right place, the Sifaat describe how they should sound, whether heavy or light, whispered or voiced. Together, Makharij and Sifaat make your recitation clear and accurate.

Common beginner rules to master early

  • Noon Saakin and Tanween rules (Idghaam, Ikhfaa, Iqlaab, Izhaar)
  • Meem Saakin rules
  • Elongation (Madd) and its basic lengths
  • Qalqalah (the echoing letters)

How long does it take?

With consistent, corrected practice, most beginners build a solid working foundation within a few months, faster with live feedback than with self-study alone.
